Will chicken liver work as fishing bait (freshwater fishing)?

freshwater fishing
iwuvrockandroll asked:

Has anyone tried it? Will it fall off the hook? I think I’ve heard of it somewhere.
I forgot to mention that I wasn’t planning on using it for catfish.

Catfish like anything that stinks and wiggles on the bottom; set it up in a two hook rig, get a bobber and pig out later.

yup, it works well, but you may need to watch it falling off the hook after a few casts. trebel hooks work the best.

it’s very delicate that is why i switched to beef liver i feel it works better because it’s tougher and stays longer on the hook allowing for a bigger fish to strike at it since the chicken liver falls off with any little nibble that the smaller catfish give it

yes it is good for catfish, however you might have issues keeping it on the hook. to make that not an issue you can use pantyhose to hold it in place.. cut a circle out of pant hose hook the chicken livers onto your hook, place it all in the center of the pantyhose and wrap it all up tying it with a rubber band or fishing line at the top of the hook, making a sack. This will keep it all on the hook for you without effecting its effectiveness… Good Luck

Yes the chicken livers will work well for cats, they satay on the hook pretty good, but it could be better, use beef or pork livers, they stay on better, you can also get carp on them ever so often, you wanna use a short shank hook or a treble hook, on a 1/2 wight with about 30lb leader.

Yes it will work for catfish, carp and maybe sturgeon. It won’t fall off the hook if you put it on well.

Chicken livers are one of the best baits going for catfish. For a good homemade bait recipe, I take about a pound of chicken livers, place them in a plastic container with a cover, and set them outside (not in direct sun) to “cure” for a day or two. You want the meat to spoil, but not dry out. Keep it moist. Once it smells reasonably “bad”, chop up some garlic cloves, mix them in with the livers, and refrigerate them at least 2-3 days before using them as bait. All this odoriferous concoction should be (usually) irresistible to catfish.

Chicken liver is quite popular for getting bottom-feeding fish. It does tend to slip off the hook easily, but there are methods for preventing that. One thing you can do is make a dough out of it by putting the liver in a blender and mixing in some flour until it’s good and firm, then thoroughly mix some cotton ball fibers in by hand and it will be almost impossible for it to fall off the hook (do make sure you use a separate blender for this purpose, or your spouse will never let you back in the kitchen :-) You could also soak the liver in salt water for a few days, which will toughen it up and help it stay on the hook better.

I recently watched a video on YouTube “Catfish for Beginners” and the man gets fresh chicken liver and wraps it in soft mesh cloth then ties the sac with elastic string. Check out the video it seems like a great idea!!!
