I’m 24 years old and will be arriving in Anchorage on May 17th. I’ve heard that Homer is a great place to work out of. What’s it like there as far as possibilities to find a job on a fishing boat? What is there to do when I’m in port? What are other options in other Alaskan towns?

If ya’ know someone that is a resident of AK., then that’ll be a BIG advantage!!! Take some strolls on the docks and inquire about getting on a boat. If it be Homer your lookin’ at, (pretty small town, population around 4,000) they have quite a lot of seining boats in the harbor’s along with trollers and gill netters. Gill netters and trollers are usually a one or two man operation and chance’s of someone takin’ on a “green deck hand” are pretty slim. Best bet for ya’ are the seiners (larger crew). Another way is gettin’ on at a cold storage (fish cannery) the pay is good but it can be pretty messy work and check with incomin’ boat’s about job availabilities. Keep in mind this is seasonal work, so it’s best to know the seasons. It might help ya’ to go on the internet and search for Fishing Jobs in Alaska. There are jobs on crab boats, but it is very, very rough and dangerous work!! I lived in Southeastern AK., (Juneau) and worked fishin’ boats from Sitka to Yakutat for a few years so have a pretty good idea as ta’ whats goin’ on. Ha’, any chance of one gettin’ out of the “Lower 48″ is the first step. I’d like ta’ pack up the MS’s and head back ourselves. Good luck to ya’ and keep in mind searchin’ the internet…
