There are freshwater shrimp and a lot of fish food is made from shrimp. While it may not be the best freshwater bait it is gonna work, especially for catfish and the bottom feeders. Bluegills will love it also. I would suggest trying it at your lake, if it doesn’t work use some bread to catch shiners and use them for bait. Best of luck to you and catch a bunch!
If you live near the coast, then shrimp is great bait for freshwater fish. In brackish water areas, freshwater fish live alongside shrimp and learn to love them as much as saltwater fish do. On the gulf coast, they’re great bait for bass, bluegill, catfish, etc. If you fish in pure fresh water, then shrimp will only be good for the least picky species–bluegills, catfish, grinnell, and the like.
We use ghost shrimp( some ppl call em sand shrimp) and grass shrimp and mud shrimp for sturgeon. Works real well for strippers, leopard shark witch will eat anything, and yes catfish like above mentioned. But i have also used freshwater shrimp to catch big steelhead on the west coast in central california and it to works well, as this is part of thier ocean diet. So I guess you could say YES. At Least its worked for me.

Only if you want to catch Catfish.
Otherwise, you could use bread/dough balls, crickets, meal worms, minnows, shiners, and lures.
No, not at all. You can use other kinds of bugs like grasshoppers, Junebugs, or leaches. Minnows work well too.

I’ve heard they can be very good for catfish, but I’ve never tried it personally.
