What’s the best freshwater fish tank filter out there?

freshwater fishing
Kuoppa asked:

I have sixty gallon freshwater fish tank and the filter I have used is the Millenium 3000. It’s starting to fall apart (I have had it for about 4 years) and I was going to go to the local pet shop and get it replaced, but I was wondering if there was a better filter out there (I was never quite satisfied with the 3000). Thanks in advance.

Following the rules of “get a filter rated for at least double your tank’s capacity” and the venerable “you get what you pay for”, I recommend Eheim model 2229. They make a dang good filter. All of the parts are easily purchased individually, which can make repair cost-effective.

Eheims and Fluvals are excellent cannister filters with both biological and mechanical aspects. You never have to completely ’strip’ one, just clean or replace the different strata at staggered intervals. I had a Fluval. I would just rinse and reuse the sponge one month, rinse and reuse the ceramics the next month, change the charcoal every 6 weeks. I used a Fluval 300 on my 58 gallon tank along with aeration and my fish (angels, rams, diamond tetras) did great.
