Are small freshwater fish compatible with “lucky bamboo” if they were placed in a decent sized vase?

You could put the bamboo in the jar (as long as it can reach the surface), but NO fish should be kept in a vase. Fish require stable parameters, and in such a small body of water, temperature fluctuates rapidly, which is EXTREMELY stressful. Also, with no filter to break down waste, you would have to do daily water changes to prevent your fish from poisoning itself. Most fish need dissolved oxygen in their water, and with no filter to provide surface agitation, they will drown in oxygen deficient water. Simply put, NO fish in that vase! You can go to any pet store and pick up a 2.5 gallon tank setup (filter and heater included) for about $20, which you could use to create a bamboo forest and house a single Betta with some freshwater shrimp (Ghost, Red Cherry, Bumblebee, Orange Bee, Amano/Japonica, Singapore, or Bamboo Shrimp) and a Mystery Snail. You would need to do weekly maintenance to keep them healthy, but it would be VERY rewarding to provide your Betta with a proper tank and watch it live 4+ years. EDIT: I don’t know if I made this clear: bamboo, if kept fully under water, will rot. It absolutely needs to reach the water’s surface.

just a comment, “lucky bamboo” is not really a bamboo. they will grow EMERSED in water. in the orient, these plants are used as indoor plants to bring luck specially in the forthcoming new year when people give them as gifts. they are usually placed in large containers because they do get quite big. as to temperature, hey man, we’re in the tropics. we sometimes have to get chillers to keep our fish from dying.
i guess if you integrate the lucky bamboo with the lucky fountain(driven by 2watt power head) and add a small filter to the fountain you could have a fish tank and a lucky ornament to boot. just be sure the vase contains a few gallons of water. you probably want the fish to prevent mosquitoes from breeding in the vase. in that case a betta would work perfectly. you would still have to feed him of course
point to ponder. any container large enough to prevent a bamboo plant from reaching the surface has got to be large. the smallest bamboo plant i know grows to 3-4 feet. the largest over 20 feet.
